Dear colleagues,
As we prepare for the start of another academic year, we would like to share an update on one of the College's most significant campus improvement projects—the construction of the new Center for Global Engagement.
The Center for Global Engagement represents an exciting investment in Pomona's future. When completed, it will provide a welcoming home for language learning, intercultural engagement, international programs, and collaboration across our campus. The building has been thoughtfully designed to support the ways our students learn, connect, and engage with the world, and it reflects Pomona's longstanding commitment to global education.
Like any major construction project, this work will require patience and flexibility from our community. We recognize that construction can occasionally be inconvenient, and we appreciate your understanding as we work to create a space that will benefit generations of Sagehens.
What You Can Expect
The demolition phase of the project is essentially complete. However, over the coming months, construction activity will continue around the former Oldenborg Hall site. During this time, you may notice increased construction vehicle traffic near the project area, particularly around Seaver Theatre and Studio Art. There will also be periods of elevated noise and occasional vibrations associated with demolition and heavy construction activities. While these impacts are unavoidable, every effort is being made to minimize disruption to teaching, learning, research, and campus life.
Construction fencing will remain in place throughout the project to clearly separate work areas from pedestrian spaces. Temporary pathways and directional signage will help maintain safe and convenient access across campus, and construction traffic will be carefully coordinated to reduce impacts whenever possible.
Our Commitment to Safety
The safety of our students, faculty, staff, visitors, and construction personnel remains our highest priority.
The College and our construction partners are committed to maintaining a safe, well-managed project throughout every phase of construction. Certified contractors are conducting all demolition and construction activities in accordance with applicable environmental and safety regulations. Dust suppression systems, debris containment measures, and continuous environmental monitoring are in place to ensure work is completed responsibly and with minimal impact on the surrounding campus environment.
Looking Ahead
Although construction can be disruptive at times, it also marks an exciting milestone for Pomona College. The Center for Global Engagement will create new opportunities for learning, collaboration, and cultural exchange while serving as a vibrant gathering place for our community for decades to come.
We are grateful for your patience, flexibility, and support as this important project moves forward. We will continue to share updates as significant milestones are reached and will communicate any changes that may affect campus operations.
Thank you for helping us navigate this period of transformation. Together, we are building a space that reflects Pomona College's commitment to academic excellence, global engagement, and an exceptional student experience.
