Three Pomona College students did research this summer in the Center for Computational Astrophysics at the Flatiron Institute in New York City, thanks to the efforts of Jorge Moreno, assistant professor of physics and astronomy. 

Rosalia Romero, assistant professor of art history, is an organizer for a pair of exhibitions showing through May 28 at The Cheech in Riverside, Calif., and Samuel White ’23 and Daniel Velazquez ’25 have served as her research assistants.

As a Napier Award for Creative Leadership recipient and a Projects for Peace awardee, Elisa Velasco ’23 will design and implement a summer program called Sin Límites (Without Limits) for Latinx high school freshmen and sophomores in Oklahoma.

The NSF fellowship will provide Pomona students and alumni with an annual $37,000 stipend and $12,000 cost of education allowance for three years over a five-year fellowship period.

Zoë Batterman ’24 and Alexandra Turvey ’24 have been named Goldwater Scholars, one of the most prestigious awards for undergraduates in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics.

A $1.6 million award from the National Science Foundation and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation will allow Wallace Meyer and his collaborators to identify solutions to keep species of Hawaiian land snails alive.

Chemistry Professor Daniel J. O'Leary is using colorful models representing the shape and form of molecular orbitals to help students visualize and learn principles of organic chemistry. They are made with a hobby-grade 3-D printer.

Rya Jetha '23 and Mohammed Ahmed '23 will pursue master's degrees in Cambridge University's Downing College during the next academic year as recipients of the Downing Scholarship. Each year up to two Pomona students are selected for the award.

The Forum on Education Abroad announced that Kiya Henderson '23  is the winner of its Award for Academic Achievement Abroad for her research paper, “A Retrospective Analysis of Maternal Mortality in Kisumu, Kenya from March 2021 to March 2022.

Through the Women in Security program, now in its second year, students at Pomona College can learn firsthand about the experiences of women who are in the midst of advancing their careers in security-related fields.
