Pomona College has launched a year-long initiative to strengthen shared governance across the institution. This effort will be facilitated by David Maxwell, senior fellow at the Association of Governing Boards (AGB), who brings deep expertise in helping colleges and universities align governance practices with mission and institutional values.
Purpose and Goals
The initiative will examine the current state of shared governance at the College, identify areas for improved clarity, communication, and collaboration, and develop recommendations to support a more transparent and inclusive governance culture. The focus will be on enhancing how trustees, faculty, staff, students, and senior leadership work together in support of the College’s long-term health and effectiveness.
Project Timeline
- Spring 2025: AGB’s consultant, David Maxwell will hold listening sessions with stakeholder leadership groups within faculty, students and staff. These groups include Faculty Executive Committee (FEC), Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC), Staff Council. A session with the general Pomona community will also be offered.
- Fall 2025: Launch of a Shared Governance Working Group with representatives from across campus constituencies
- Fall 2025–Spring 2026: Ongoing work by the Working Group
- Full Working Group meets every two weeks
- Working Group Steering Committee meets on alternating weeks
- March 2026: Final report with recommendations and potential next steps shared with the Pomona community.
Working Group Membership
The Working Group will include members from many of our campus' constituents. Each stakeholder group (FEC, ASPC and Staff Council) will nominate three representatives to serve on the Working Group. Members from executive staff and the Board of Trustees will also serve in the Working Group.
These members will play a central role in shaping the initiative and must be able to commit time regularly throughout the academic year. David Maxwell will meet with stakeholder leadership groups in April 2025 to offer guidance on representative selection and to answer questions about the process.
A crucial component of the initiative is establishing clear communication loops so everyone, including faculty, staff, and students, understands how their input is used and why decisions were made. This doesn't mean everyone is going to agree with every decision. However, this initiative commits to ensuring those decisions are transparent, explained, and communicated clearly, so we all better understand and trust the process itself, even when we disagree with outcomes. Ultimately, this initiative is about creating accountability for decision-making, sharing the rationale behind those decisions, and ensuring that concerns and inputs are genuinely heard and meaningfully considered.
