In an inspiring opportunity for students, faculty and staff to engage in-depth with the democratic process, Pomona College will host a debate between the top candidates for California governor in historic Bridges Auditorium on Tuesday, April 28.

The 90-minute debate, scheduled for 5:30 p.m., will offer viewers and voters a discussion of the major issues facing the state. Candidates will be invited based on polling and fundraising from both political parties. CBS stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno and Santa Barbara will broadcast and stream the debate.

Living Our Mission

Pomona’s decision to host this event, in partnership with CBS News California and Asian Pacific American Public Affairs (APAPA), demonstrates the College’s commitment to the values of both democracy and the liberal arts on a national stage. The debate will feature robust conversations across ideological differences and highlight the importance of engagement with local, national and global issues—hallmarks of our institutional values.

Our Seat at the Table

The College is particularly thrilled that the Pomona community will have many opportunities to meaningfully participate in this event. Alongside CBS News anchors, Politics Professor Sara Sadhwani will serve as one of the debate’s moderators. Additionally, beyond ticketed attendance, CBS California and ASPC will host a watch party for the Pomona community at the College’s Frary Dining Hall.

Get Involved

There are plenty of ways to get involved. We will open as much seating for the Pomona College community as possible. We are also working with ASPC and the League of Women Voters student chapter to offer parallel and additional programming.
