The President, Interim Dean of the College, and the Executive Council have requested that the Ad-hoc Committee on Pomona and Artificial Intelligence help guide Pomona’s response to the proliferation of AI in the academy and in the world in which our students will engage beyond Pomona. We are called to respond ethically, and to make sure that any uses of AI on our campus have a positive effect on learning, creativity, and discovery. To help us do so, they will advise on the following questions, as well as provide any further information and advice they deem prudent:
- How might a Pomona liberal arts education, more so than any other kind of undergraduate education, be seen to prepare students for the world post-graduation? What do we need to do to further that preparation and habits of mind it fosters as AI becomes more present in our lives? How do we define the range of skills beyond AI that our students will need to live and work in this environment?
- How are we helping students and faculty to understand AI?
- What does teaching look like now, and how might we adapt our pedagogies to continue to ensure a world-class education (including ensuring academic freedom and integrity)? Do we have use cases that show how AI can enhance learning, creativity, and discovery?
- What is required to provide world-class research support for faculty and students?
The committee will consult broadly across our community, including drawing from student input throughout the process, to ensure that we are understanding the implications of AI across the lifecycle of students and faculty. The committee's report will be submitted by March 12, 2027.
