Campus Update from President Starr (2/27/24)

Dear Pomona College Community,

As we near the end of February, I share several updates from various ends of our campus.

Expanding on our global education, we’re thrilled to announce the first Pomona College faculty-led study abroad program, a credit-bearing academic course combining traditional classroom learning with experiential learning off-campus. This May, Politics Professor and former U.S. diplomat Mietek Boduszynski will travel with 14 Pomona and other Claremont Colleges students to Belgium and Morocco to explore how human rights are incorporated into diplomatic policy and practice as part of his course titled Diplomacy and Human Rights in the Mediterranean.

Back on campus, Pomona remains committed to recruiting more transfer students. Brianna Huynh ’24 and Noah Benjamin ’24, two transfer students who will be graduating this May, share how their residential life experience has helped them become part of our community fabric.

Our students make Pomona proud. Take Kendra Nguyen ’24, who was recognized for their exoplanet research by the American Astronomical Society last month. A first-generation student, Nguyen has found a second home and mentorship in the Physics and Astronomy Department.

Pomona faculty’s research continues to find ways to address the world’s grand challenges. Psychological Sciences Professor Adam Pearson was part of a global team studying climate change behavior, and the group’s research was published in Science Advances this month. The researchers’ goal through their findings is to help lawmakers and practitioners generate support for climate policy and action.

In the bustle of the spring semester, I offer a reminder to check out a variety of events taking place on our campus. This weekend, don’t miss the student production of Everybody, an adaptation of the 15th-century play Everyman starting Feb. 29 through March 3 at Allen Theatre.

Three new exhibitions are in full swing at the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College. The community can enjoy—for free—recently inaugurated showcases of drawings, agritextiles and Cahuilla baskets in Infinity on Paper, Stitch Field and Continuity. For more details on upcoming events, visit Pomona’s calendar on our website.

Finally, a hearty congratulations to Sagehens Swimming and Diving for their outstanding performance at this weekend’s SCIAC championships! The women’s team captured the 2024 SCIAC Championship title, marking the 24th conference title in program history. In addition, Alexandra Turvey ’24 earned SCIAC Swimmer of the Year and Coach JP Gowdy and staff were named SCIAC Women’s Swimming and Diving Coaching Staff of the Year.

Go Hens,

Gabi
