President Starr's Weekly Update (3/2/23)

Dear Pomona College Community,

Opportunity lies at the heart of the Pomona College experience, and today I want to point you to just a few ways Sagehens are opening doors.

Earlier this semester, The Smart Start Career Fellows program brought a group of students to the Bay Area to visit employers and meet with leaders. Now in its fifth year, this program helps first-generation and/or low-income sophomores start to develop career paths. The aim, as noted in our web story, is to show students the many possibilities after Pomona and help prepare students to pursue them.

In the same vein, Associate Professor of Politics Tom Le is directing the Women in Security program, offering Pomona students the opportunity to meet and learn from women working for agencies such as the U.S. State Department as part of a year-long fellowship.

Learning about L.A.

Closer to campus, the Claremont deluge of recent days is a reminder that our typically-arid region is home to its share of surprising waterways, with the best known being the Los Angeles River. So the timing of a new exhibition at Honnold Library couldn’t be more prescient.

Curated by Pomona Professor Char Miller and scholar Tilly Hinton, “It Really is a River: Exploring the Los Angeles River” combines historic and present-day images of the waterway that winds through the heart of L.A. on its path to the Pacific.

The exhibit opens Monday, March 6, and serves as a tributary, you might say, of a larger public humanities project regarding the river.

Athletics Update

Finally, let’s celebrate the news that, in a huge win, the Sagehens women’s water polo team upset Indiana, an NCAA Division I team that was ranked No. 11 in the nation. Pomona-Pitzer is the defending USA Water Polo Division III national champion, and the team next plays UC Santa Barbara in the 2023 Convergence Tournament on Friday, March 3.

That same day, the No. 24 Sagehen’s men’s basketball team plays No. 10 Williams in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Connecticut at 1:15 p.m. Pacific.

Go Sagehens!

With best wishes,

Gabi
