President Starr's Weekly Update (3/14/23)

Dear Pomona College Community,

As spring sends us to thoughts of new beginnings and fresh possibilities, I want to remind our campus that study away is fully back, whether students choose a program overseas or here in the U.S. And the experience continues to be transformative, says Nicole Desjardins Gowdy, senior director of international and domestic programs, in our new web story.

“One thing that can be surprising is how much you grow as a person in study away,” notes Gowdy, adding that students return with greater confidence. “They’ve had experience navigating different environments and worldviews.”

A bit closer to campus, Evelyne Aviles Velazquez ’26 recently was in our state capital of Sacramento, advocating for funding for Cal Grants, California’s financial aid program for college students, as part of an annual event organized by the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU). It’s important to dispel myths surrounding private institutions and financial aid to help put more students on track for college—something Pomona is deeply committed to doing.

Finally, with spring break here, I want to remind everyone to reserve their free tickets for our March 22 tribute to civil rights icon Myrlie Evers-Williams ’68. We will celebrate her 90th birthday and the gift of her archival collection to the College.

With best wishes,

Gabi
