President Starr's Weekly Update (3/21/23)

Dear Pomona College Community,

March brings one of the most important moments in the life of the College, when we admit a stellar new class of Sagehens. On Friday, our admissions team notified students from around the world that they had been admitted to the Class of 2027, with acceptances due by May 1.

The admitted students come from 48 states, American Samoa, the District of Columbia and 50 other nations. First-generation students comprise nearly a quarter of the admitted class, and this is the most diverse such class in the history of Pomona.

Many thanks to the admissions team and everyone on campus who has helped with recruiting this exceptional group. I can’t wait to welcome these new Sagehens to our community in the weeks and months ahead.

Of course, this month is also known for the March Madness tournaments, and Melissa Barlow ’87 will be in the thick of the action as a longtime NCAA Division 1 women’s basketball official. You can learn more about the former Pomona-Pitzer athlete’s unusual career path in our new web story and, for a full range of Sagehen spring sports, follow the latest in Sagehen athletics online as well.

Finally, I want to extend an invitation to the entire community to attend our public celebration tomorrow evening, March 22, for civil rights icon Myrlie Evers-Williams ’68, who recently donated her archival collection to the College. I look forward to honoring a hero of the civil rights movement and celebrating her 90th birthday.

With best wishes,

Gabi
