Taking Classes at Other Schools

FAQs

Can I attend classes at a local community college while still enrolled at Pomona College?

Yes. If you are enrolled fulltime at Pomona College (3 course credits) you are permitted to take additional classes at another school without getting special approval from the ISA. Some coordination between the International Student Services offices at each school is generally required. Such classes are generally for your personal enrichment and do not necessarily transfer back to Pomona College unless you have made prior arrangements with the Registrar’s office.

Can I take an on-line class offered by another school?

Yes. As long as you are enrolled Fulltime at Pomona College (3 course credits), taking an on-line course from another school will not affect your F-1 status.

I have heard of Concurrent Enrollment. What is it and can I do it?

Concurrent enrollment is when you are enrolled part-time at 2 different schools and the combined enrollment constitutes full-time enrollment. Your SEVIS record is maintained at the school that issued your I-20. Coordination at both the academic level (for possible transfer credits) and the F-1 status level is required. This is not the same as taking classes at the other Claremont Colleges. Pomona College students are always able to enroll in classes offered by any of the colleges in the consortium.

Issues to consider:

  • The second school must be approved to enroll F-1 students. (Not all schools out there are approved by Homeland Security to enroll F-1 students.)
  • Pomona College financial aid will typically not extend to colleges outside the consortium.
  • Since F-1 regulations strictly limit the amount of on-line courses you can take, any enrollment that includes on-line course work must be pre-approved by the ISA.
  • Proof of enrollment (before the course begins) and proof of completion (at the conclusion of the course) must be provided to the ISA at Pomona College.
