Students enrolled in the Trans-Pacific Japan: Love & Money course this semester didn’t just learn in the classroom. Rather, they traveled to Japan and in turn welcomed Japanese students to Claremont as part of the Tomodachi Inouye Scholars Program.

Prof. Lupe Bacio, associate professor of psychological science and Chicana/o Latina/o studies, says her goal “has always been to try to use science and evidence-based practices to reduce inequality and inequities.”

Leading up to Commencement on May 18, meet six members of the Class of 2025 and learn about their time at Pomona, their future plans and what they will miss after they graduate.

The Guggenheim Fellowship, one of the world’s preeminent honors for scholars in the arts and humanities, will give Lethem the opportunity to revisit the backdrop of two of his finest works, Fortress of Solitude (2003) and Brooklyn Crime Novel (2023).

In Pomona’s ongoing quest to foster inclusive and constructive dialogue, the Bridging the Gap program asks students to lower their barriers and embrace their commonalities, says Avis Hinkson, vice president for student affairs and dean of students.

Shark Mutulili, a public policy analysis major with a politics focus, has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship. The Rhodes Scholarship is awarded to about 100 students each year, 32 from the United States and the rest from countries across the world.  

A fellowship from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation will make it possible for Nadiya Muhammad ’25 to spend a year studying how midwifery and herbal-based medicine are practiced in the African diaspora in several countries.

This year, Draper Center staffers and student coordinators planned trips to Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco to serve and explore. Between the three groups, about two dozen students volunteered with organizations addressing pressing issues.

While many college students flock to Hawaii over spring break for rest and relaxation, 10 Pomona students spent their week on the island of Oahu dissecting albatross, searching for invasive snails and restoring a traditional Hawaiian fishpond. 

The Sagehen Civic Scholars Internship Program is connecting Pomona College students with the City of Claremont. It was created by Josh Crowley ’27, who is community liaison for the Associated Students of Pomona College, in cooperation with the city.
