Tommy Matheis ’28
Hey guys! My name is Tommy, and I am excited to be a math and stats liaison this year! I'm from Orange County, California, and am a junior math major on the stats track at Pomona. I've conducted research in data science and applied statistics, but my main interests lie in various areas of biostatistics. After I graduate, I plan to pursue a PhD in biostatistics and eventually contribute to cancer research.
In addition to being a math major, I am a diver on the Pomona-Pitzer Swim & Dive team. When I'm not doing homework, I'm usually training or supporting the various athletic teams around campus. If you see me around, I'm more than happy to talk about course selections, summer opportunities, research, coffee/matcha recommendations, or anything non-math-related as well. I hope to see the math community at Pomona grow and look forward to meeting everyone.
Marina Eissenstat ’29
Hey everyone! I’m Marina, and I’m a sophomore from Boulder, Colorado on the applied math track. I love all sorts of math, and I’m especially interested in both optimization and differential equations. The math community here at Pomona is so special, and I’m excited to be a liaison this year!
Outside of math, I can be found singing with the Pomona College Choir and the Glee Club, at the gym, or creating coffee concoctions at Frank. I’m always happy to chat about anything and can often be found in Estella, so feel free to reach out!
Yousif Najat ’29
Hello everyone! My name is Yousif Najat, and I'm super excited to be one of the Math Department Liaisons this year! I'm a sophomore at Pomona majoring in Mathematics (Statistics Track) with a minor in Data Science. Outside of math, I love café hopping, and you’ll probably find me either studying in Estella or exploring local coffee shops. Recently, I’ve become really interested in actuarial science and hope to pursue a career in actuary after graduation.
One of my favorite parts of the Pomona Math Department is the welcoming and supportive community it fosters, and I’m excited to help make that community even more accessible for students. Whether you’re looking for advice on courses, research opportunities, becoming an actuary, departmental resources, or simply want someone to bounce ideas off of, I’d love to help! John Goodwin ’28
Hi everyone! My name is John Goodwin, and I’m a junior from Portland, Oregon, majoring in Mathematics and Economics. I’m especially interested in statistics, mathematical modeling, and using data to better understand real-world problems. This past summer, I worked on a research project using statistical and machine-learning methods to study opioid overdose patterns in Southern California. Outside of class, I throw javelin for the Pomona-Pitzer track and field team, work as an RA, and am involved in consulting and coding organizations on campus.
I’m excited to serve as a math liaison and help students feel connected to the department. I’d be happy to talk about choosing classes, balancing multiple academic interests, finding research opportunities, or getting more involved in the math community. Sebastian Pollack ’29
Hey everyone! I’m Sebastian, a sophomore on the statistics track at Pomona from the San Francisco Bay Area. I enjoy exploring a wide variety of topics within mathematics and statistics, in particular data science and my favorite math concept, the Lebesgue integral. Outside of math, I'm studying computer science and German here at Pomona. I enjoy playing violin and viola, enjoy cooking, and love to both play and watch soccer.
I'm super excited to be a liaison for this lovely and welcoming community. I'm happy to chat and provide help on anything you need related to the department — just reach out! Hope to see you all around Estella or at the department events!
Association for Women in Mathematics Student Chapter
The student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics at Pomona College strives for gender equity in mathematics by coordinating resource-sharing and community-building events. Recent highlights include technical workshops on mathematical programming languages, attending the AWM Research Symposium, as well as themed lunches with special guests. This year, the agenda will also include discussions on equity and inclusiveness in mathematics, student panels on topics such as research and post-graduate opportunities, professional development oriented events, and more!
