Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Optional practical training is work authorization for F-1 students that allows temporary employment directly related to your major field of study. There are several types of OPT that you can participate in.

Pre-Completion OPTAvailable to students during their program of study. Maximum of up to 12 months of full-time pre-completion OPT (more than 20 hours a week) is allowed. Participation in pre-completion OPT deducts from the maximum time available for post-completion OPT.
Post-Completion OPTAvailable to students after their program of study is completed. Students must work full-time (more than 20 hours per week). Maximum of up to 12 months.
STEM OPT ExtensionA 24-month extension of post-completion OPT available to students with eligible STEM majors.
H-1B Cap-Gap ExtensionAn extension for F-1 students who are in-between the end of their post-completion OPT or STEM OPT and the start of their H-1B status.
