Optional practical training is work authorization for F-1 students that allows temporary employment directly related to your major field of study. There are several types of OPT that you can participate in.
| Category | Description |

| Pre-Completion OPT | Available to students during their program of study. Maximum of up to 12 months of full-time pre-completion OPT (more than 20 hours a week) is allowed. Participation in pre-completion OPT deducts from the maximum time available for post-completion OPT. |
| Post-Completion OPT | Available to students after their program of study is completed. Students must work full-time (more than 20 hours per week). Maximum of up to 12 months. |
| STEM OPT Extension | A 24-month extension of post-completion OPT available to students with eligible STEM majors. |
| H-1B Cap-Gap Extension | An extension for F-1 students who are in-between the end of their post-completion OPT or STEM OPT and the start of their H-1B status. |
