Pomona College is dedicated to safeguarding community health by minimizing exposure to smoking and second-hand smoke, in accordance with state and local laws. The college has implemented comprehensive policies to ensure a smoke-free environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. These measures not only comply with legal requirements but also promote a healthier campus atmosphere, reflecting Pomona College's commitment to fostering well-being and safety within its community. This policy applies to all employees, students, visitors, and contractors on campus.
Smoking is prohibited within 25 feet of the main entrances, exits, and operable windows of buildings. Smoking is also strictly prohibited in all administrative and academic buildings, including offices, classrooms, laboratories, restrooms, hallways, and common areas. Additionally, the use of e-cigarettes, cannabis, other electronic nicotine delivery systems, and vapor-emitting devices—whether they contain nicotine or not—that mimic the use of tobacco products is prohibited inside campus buildings.
Smoking Policy
Environmental Impact
Smoking has significant negative effects on the environment. Cigarette butts are a major source of litter and can take years to decompose, releasing harmful chemicals into the soil and water. The production and disposal of tobacco products contribute to deforestation, pollution, and climate change. By reducing smoking on campus, we aim to minimize our environmental footprint and promote a healthier, more sustainable environment.
Health Risks
Smoking poses serious health risks to both smokers and non-smokers. It is a leading cause of various diseases, including lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory infections. Second-hand smoke exposure can also cause similar health issues in non-smokers, particularly children and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. By implementing this policy, we aim to protect the health of our community and reduce the prevalence of smoking-related illnesses.
Benefits of a Smoke-Free Campus
A smoke-free campus offers numerous benefits, including:
- Improved Health: Reducing exposure to second-hand smoke decreases the risk of smoking-related illnesses for everyone on campus.
- Cleaner Environment: A smoke-free campus reduces litter from cigarette butts and other tobacco products, contributing to a cleaner and more pleasant environment.
- Enhanced Air Quality: Eliminating smoking indoors and in designated areas improves overall air quality, making the campus a healthier place to live, work, and study.
- Positive Image: A smoke-free campus promotes a positive image of the institution as a health-conscious and environmentally responsible community.
- Support for Quitting: By creating a smoke-free environment, we encourage and support individuals who are trying to quit smoking.
