Chinese Language Placement Exam

The Chinese Placement Test/Chinese Program Orientation

If you have any questions about your placement test results, Chinese courses, the Chinese program, and/or want to meet the professors in Chinese, please come to the orientation.

All students with experience with the language (taking informal or formal classes, speaking at home, lived in a Chinese-speaking country, etc.) who want to take a Chinese course must take the online placement exam on this link: Canvas.

You will get a numerical score from 1-8. How to read your placement exam results:

• Level 1= CHIN1A (fall only) Elementary Chinese
• Level 2= CHIN1B (spring only)
• Level 3=CHIN51A (fall only) Intermediate Chinese
• Level 4=CHIN51B/CHIN55 (spring only)
• Level 5=CHIN111A (fall only) Advanced Chinese
• Level 6=CHIN111B (spring only)
• Level 7=CHIN12x courses Advanced Chinese
• Level 8= Courses above the 12x level (only with the instructor's permission)
• Level H1=CHIN2 (fall only) Chinese for Bilinguals
• Level H2=CHIN51H (spring only)
