Institute for Inclusive Excellence Assessment

The Institute for Inclusive Excellence holds a bold vision to create a Pomona College where every single community member feels valued, that they belong, and can flourish. Realizing this vision requires focused efforts around training, reflection, and assessment related to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on our campus.

The IIE views assessment as vital for promoting inclusive excellence in teaching and learning. We encourage faculty to utilize diverse assessment techniques that engage all students. By gathering student feedback and classroom data on a continual basis, faculty gain insights into the student experience that inform incremental improvements to pedagogy, curricula, and support structures. Our goal is to foster a culture of teaching excellence that leverages ongoing assessment to meet the needs of diverse learners.

The IIE utilizes assessment to

  • Establish baseline measurements for key elements of our vision such as inclusive pedagogy, praxis, student sense of belonging, and equity in academic outcomes.
  • Uncover gaps between where we are currently and our vision that reveal opportunities for connection and growth.
  • Inform annual goals and long-term strategic objectives that incrementally move us toward our vision.
  • Provide insights into the needs and experiences of the community to guide our actions.
  • Report progress regularly to enhance transparency and accountability.
  • Identify bright spots of success we can build upon and challenges requiring renewed efforts.
  • Engage the campus community in bringing the vision to life by acting upon assessment findings.
