President Starr's Weekly Update (9/28/22)

Dear Pomona College Community,

I have exciting news to share: The new Center for Athletics, Recreation and Wellness will open to the campus community on October 14, which also is Founders Day for our 135-year-old institution.

Women’s volleyball will play the first public sports event in the new structure, with a 7 p.m., October 14 game against Occidental College, an old-time athletics rival founded the same year as Pomona.

Our community will begin to get access to the facility a bit earlier, with tours, speakers, sample fitness classes and pre-registration for use of the facility, all starting Monday, October 10 and continuing through October 14.

The center is an outstanding addition to our campus, with a functional, welcoming and sustainable design. Add to that more space, more and better equipment, stunning views and artwork on prominent display.

We want everyone in our community to feel welcome in this space, as the up-to-date center will play a central role in our work to promote life-long habits for wellness and health.

Our web story is full of details (and new interior photos) on the team facilities, workout spaces and creative architectural touches with nods to Pomona tradition.

Along with the official opening of the new center, Founders Day will bring a community meal and service project.

Pomona will celebrate with an early evening picnic open to students, faculty, staff, and family members. The community project associated with the event—assembling hygiene kits for people facing homelessness in our region—connects to our institution’s goal of public service, allowing for all to participate in this mission. More details will be shared in the days ahead.

The spirit of service has deep roots on our campus as we seek to bear our added gifts in trust for all. In that spirit, let me share with you the heartening story of how Jacob Greene ’23 worked with staff and faculty members to remove grass and make our campus landscape more water-wise.

It’s always inspiring to see Sagehens working for a better future.

With best wishes,

Gabi
