About the Writing Program

A cornerstone of intellectual inquiry, writing is at the heart of a liberal arts education. At Pomona, writing and the teaching of writing are college-wide enterprises. The College Writing program offers resources to help faculty and students create vibrant communities of readers and writers across campus – on paper, in classrooms, dorms, and dining halls – and beyond.

The CSWIM at Pomona provides students with a community of experienced readers and writers, offering free, one-on-one consultations at any stage of the writing process—from generating a thesis and structuring an argument to fine-tuning a draft. Speaking partners help

The Writing, Speaking, and Image Partners that staff the CSWIM are Pomona students – sophomores, juniors, and seniors – majoring in subjects as varied as English, politics, environmental analysis, neuroscience and physics. They are trained to work with writers at all levels, at all stages of the writing process, and on assignments in any discipline.

If you are interested in a series of appointments with the same Partner, working on a personal statement for graduate school, a writing assignment for a science class, foreign language class, or creative assignment, please email the CSWIM.

Consultation are free and confidential; all Pomona students are welcome. Although the CSWIM is not a proofreading or editing service, we can help writers learn strategies for diagnosing and improving sentence-level issues. Meetings with the Writing Partners can help students not only improve particular essays but also develop new strategies for writing and revising their work. These consultations complement – but do not replace – the advice students receive from their professors.
