The Pomona College Band Conductors

The principal conductor is Graydon Beeks, Emeritus Director of Music Programming and Facilities and Professor of Music at Pomona College.  He received his B.A. from Pomona and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. After undertaking research in England and teaching at Vassar College and Kenyon College, he returned to Pomona in 1983 and retired in 2019. In addition to conducting the band and teaching courses in music history, he supervised the scheduling and operation of the concert halls and served as departmental librarian.

Beeks is assisted by Stephen Klein, the instructor in euphonium and tuba at Pomona College, who serves as Associate Conductor and takes charge when Beeks is on leave or otherwise unavailable. Klein received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. from the Eastman School of Music, and has been an active free-lance musician and teacher in Southern California since leaving the Air Force Band of the Golden West where he was tuba soloist and principal arranger. He coaches the brass section each week and plays tuba in the ensemble. He also often appears on band concerts as a composer, arranger, or soloist.
