Dear Class of 2023 families,
On behalf of the Parents Leadership Council, we welcome you to Pomona College! We are delighted your child has chosen to be part of the Pomona community for what we hope will be a time of discovery and personal growth. As fellow parents, we understand that the transition to college life is an exciting and challenging process for parents and families, as well as for new students. Fortunately, the College and the Parents Leadership Council offer many resources to help your family navigate the process and help your student settle in to life at Pomona.
One important way Pomona provides a foundation for your child’s life at the College is through the Sponsor Program. This summer, your child will be assigned to a sponsor group, comprised of about 15 first-year students and led by two or three second-year Pomona students. Sponsors are chosen with great care and are well equipped to guide first-year students through residential life, answer questions, and create opportunities for the group to get to know one another. If you have not heard about your student’s residence hall or sponsor group assignment yet, you will soon.
While a sense of community is vitally important for our students, the Pomona College Parents Leadership Council also works closely with the Office of Parent Engagement & Giving to foster strong bonds among Pomona families. For instance, this summer, more than 100 parent volunteers will make welcome calls to families of first-year students. This call is a great time to ask any questions you may have and to learn about opportunities for your family to become active members of the Pomona community. Parent volunteers also will be on hand to welcome you to the College during Family Orientation, which is held on Move-In Day on August 25—please look for us near the Family Registration tables. Additionally, be sure to mark your calendars for February 14-16, 2020, for Family Weekend. This will be a fun and informative opportunity for Pomona parents and families to get to know one another and experience campus life.
In addition to outreach from the Parents Leadership Council, you can expect campus and community updates from the College and through Pomona College Magazine, which is published online and in print. We also encourage you to explore the Pomona Families Web in the coming weeks to find tips for the initial transition to Pomona College.
We hope you will enjoy your experience as part of the Pomona community as much as we have, and that you’ll take part in the many opportunities for your family to get involved and make connections with other Pomona families. We look forward to meeting you on campus.
Again, welcome to Pomona, and we wish you the very best during this exciting time!
