Tricia Avant and Juanita Davalos Win 2026 Distinguished Staff Award

At the end of every school year, Pomona College recognizes one or more staff members for their distinguished service to the community.

Two employees received the 2026 Distinguished Staff Award on May 22: Academic Coordinator and Gallery Manager of Art Tricia Avant and Admissions Receptionist Juanita Davalos.

Established in 1997 to honor staff members who go above and beyond what is required in their daily job, the awards are announced at the annual staff recognition luncheon, held this year in Edmunds Ballroom.

Tricia Avant

In her 11 years at the College, Tricia Avant has poured her heart and soul into providing spaces faculty, staff and students want to visit.

Her tireless work preparing gallery installations and promoting student exhibitions at Studio Art Hall reflects her character and deep commitment to the Pomona community, a colleague says.

“Tricia carries herself with a quiet grace and steady professionalism that positively shapes every space she’s in,” a nominator says. “She approaches her work and interactions with respect, composure and integrity, setting a consistent example for others.”

Multiple nominators applaud Avant’s versatility and attention to detail.

She exemplifies the spirit of excellence and dedication that defines Pomona College, a colleague writes.

“Since joining the College,” the colleague adds, “Tricia has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to supporting students, faculty and colleagues, consistently going above and beyond in her role. She brings a thoughtful, solutions-oriented approach to every challenge, fostering a welcoming and collaborative environment across campus.”

Juanita Davalos

Hers is not only the first face many people see when they enter Sumner Hall, but Juanita Davalos’ is the one they remember when they leave.

For nearly 22 years, Davalos has welcomed visitors to the College with warmth, kindness and respect, colleagues say. She brings a sense of joy to an admissions process that can often feel stressful or overwhelming.

“She embodies the mission and spirit of the College in every interaction, demonstrating curiosity, compassion and a commitment to community,” a nominator says. “Many students and families remember meeting her long after their visit, often crediting their experience as part of what made them feel connected to the College.”

What makes Davalos especially extraordinary, another nominator says, “is the human element she brings to her work.”

“She ensures that every person—regardless of their background or reason for visiting—feels heard, respected and cared for. She remembers people, follows up with them, and creates genuine connections that last well beyond a single interaction.”
