Funding for Projects

If you have an idea for a project but need money to develop or maintain your efforts, here are possible opportunities for funding:

Sustainability Office

The Sustainability Office has funding for campus projects and special events. Contact the office at sustainability@pomona.edu for more information about possible topics for projects and papers.

President's Sustainability Fund

Launched in 2007, the President's Sustainability Fund (PSF) has awarded more than $150,000 to student-led sustainability projects at Pomona College. The $15,000 annual fund is administered by the Sustainability Committee (staff, students, and faculty) and made possible through matching contributions from the Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC) and Facilities and Campus Services.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning each July, with proposals reviewed throughout the academic year until annual funding is exhausted. The PSF supports projects that advance sustainability at Pomona College by improving campus operations, informing operational decision-making through applied research or creating lasting environmental, social and economic benefits for the campus community. Priority is given to projects that are student-led, have measurable campus impact and create lasting value beyond a single event. While collaboration with campus partners is encouraged, projects should be designed for students to lead and implement rather than fund work that is already the responsibility of College departments.

Projects that have received funding in the past include:

  • Research current pest management practices and identify opportunities for sustainable practices
  • Survey of turf removal locations with a proposal for drought-tolerant landscaping
  • GIS map of outdoor lighting to identify opportunities for LED and dark-sky compliant lights
  • Reptile and amphibian habitat at the Farm
  • Reusable bags and containers for the Outdoor Education Center
  • A self-repair bike station at the Smith Campus Center
  • Reusable chopsticks for the dining halls
  • Drying racks installed in residence halls laundry rooms
  • Greenware and Cookware sustainable event kits
  • Native plant signage

Want feedback on your idea before applying? Book a meeting with the Sustainability Office to help develop project ideas and connect you with campus partners.

ASPC Sustainable Development Committee

SDC receives an annual budget from the Associated Students of Pomona College. This budget can be used for events and projects. Contact the Environmental Affairs Commissioner through the Pomona College Senate for more information.

Facilities and Campus Services

Students have collaborated with Facilities and Campus Services (FCS) to remove turf and re-landscape with native, drought-tolerant plants, install water bottle refill stations in residence halls, improve lighting across campus and more. Contact the Sustainability Office sustainability@pomona.edu to share your project idea and get connected to an FCS staff member.

The Environmental Analysis Program

The EA Program often contributes to events or projects that have an educational component, such as bringing a speaker to campus or sending a student to a conference or other event. Contact the EA Program for more information.
