About the FLRC

The Foreign Language Resource Center (FLRC) is Pomona College's hub for language learning support, Language Requirement advising, and instructional technology for the language classroom. Located in Mason Hall 101, the FLRC serves students, faculty, and staff across all six of Pomona's language sections: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish.

The Center was established in January 2008 following Mason Hall's renovation, made possible through a grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations. It was founded on the recognition that meaningful language learning requires more than repetition and drilling. Communication, intercultural understanding, and genuine human exchange are at the core of what the FLRC supports.

What We Do

The FLRC provides a full range of support for language learners and educators:

• Language Requirement advising: Students can meet with FLRC staff to explore pathways to satisfying Pomona's Language Requirement, including demonstrated proficiency in languages not offered at the Claremont Colleges.
• Language Partners: Peer tutors available for conversation practice and language skill support.
• Instructional technology support: Faculty receive hands-on support integrating technology into language courses, from audio and video production to emerging digital tools.
• Facilities and equipment: The FLRC offers multimedia workstations with 27-inch 4K iMacs, recording equipment, interactive projectors, and a document scanner. VCR and DVD viewing stations with 32" TVs. The center also maintains a foreign language film collection, print magazines, and reference dictionaries for in-center use. The computer section can be reserved for classes and presentations; the full center is available for events and receptions.
• 3D printing: An expanding 3D printing program supports language pedagogy projects across departments.
• Drop-in sessions: The FLRC hosts Instructional Technology drop-in sessions in partnership with ITS.

Walk-ins are always welcome during operating hours.

Our Approach

Language learning is about communication, creativity, and intercultural understanding. The FLRC exists to make that kind of learning more accessible: providing the tools, the space, and the support that students and faculty need to engage with languages beyond the classroom.
