The health and safety of students are priorities at Pomona College. The Office of Student Affairs maintains close relations with the staffs of special support services, including the Student Health Service, the Monsour Counseling Center, and Campus Safety. The Health Education Outreach Office at The Claremont Colleges also provides leadership in health education through student programming, as well as training all Resident Advisors in emergency procedures

Health Services & Insurance

In cases of emergency or for special services, two nearby hospitals are available:

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
1798 North Garey Avenue
Pomona, CA
(909) 865-9500

Doctor's Hospital
5000 San Bernardino Street
Montclair, CA
(909) 625-5411

The Student Health Service, located in the Student Services Center, is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from l p.m. to 5 p.m. during the school year. Among its services, it provides health education, gynecological and contraceptive consultation, minor outpatient surgery, blood tests, X-rays, electrocardiograms, and allergy shots. After hours, on weekends and in emergencies, students may contact their RA, Campus Safety, or one of the two hospitals listed above. Student Health Services has a medical provider on-call after business hours, available through Campus Safety, 909 607-2000.

Every student should be covered by some form of medical insurance. Proof of insurance is required for all students. Students can either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) of The Claremont Colleges or waive out if they carry comparable alternative insurance (enrollment/waiver forms will be required each year). The SHIP plan covers medical expenses off campus, such as hospitalization, surgery, and accidental injury. Information about the policy can be obtained through the Office of Student Affairs or at the USHIP website.

Safe Escorts

After dark, it is always advisable to walk with someone else. Although there may be a brief waiting period, Campus Safety Officers provide escort services on a priority call basis and are available 24 hours a day. Contact them at ext. 72000.

In many cases, students who are injured (i.e. suffer a broken leg or a torn ligament or have had surgery) or who are disabled and are unable to walk to class may be transported to class by means of a golf cart. To request transportation, please fill out our form LINK or contact the Smith Campus Center and Student Programs at 18610.

Safe Rides

If students have been out drinking and do not want to drive home from restaurants or clubs, the ASPC has a Safe Rides program. Funded jointly between ASPC and Anheuser Busch, students can call Yellow Cab, show a Pomona College ID, and be driven back to campus. The program operates whenever school is in session, between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. from anywhere in Claremont, Ontario, Pomona, Montclair, Rancho Cucamonga and La Verne. As this is not a shuttle service, unauthorized use will be billed to students' accounts.

Campus Safety

The Department of Campus Safety of The Claremont Colleges protects the persons and property of students, faculty, staff and visitors to The Claremont Colleges consortium, assisting law enforcement and other emergency service providers as needed, by being the first responder to emergencies of any kind. We also provide around-the-clock escort service on campus to anyone, as needed.

Do you have an emergency?

On-Call Dean

Pomona College has an on-call administrator 24 hours a day, seven days a week, who can be reached by calling Campus Safety at (909) 607-2000 (or x72000 from a campus phone) or filling out our online form. The On-Call Dean determines the appropriate steps given the situation and keeps a detailed record on the interaction and intervention. The On-Call team serves as the primary resource for managing referrals and student issues and follows up with the call.

Please visit our On-Call Dean web page for more information about this role, additional support, and student privacy.
