While on sabbatical this semester Sandeep Mukherjee is working on a series of semi-private and public installations in different locations in California and the Midwest. The first one Mukherjee has completed wraps around the “Celeb Sightings” office at Facebook in Silicon Valley. The work is a colorful display of quasi-geometric shapes made through the artist’s signature style of spraying layers of pigment mixed with household liquids in varying patterns on the surface of textured heavy duty aluminum sheeting. The palette used is a mix of earth tones and shades of blue and teal to mimic the sky and sea, but the composition in keeping with the artist’s oeuvre is decidedly abstract. In fact, the work harkens back to early 20th century abstraction, specifically the movement of Synchromism in which an orchestration of color scales formed together create harmonic works often with a central vortex. This is a torch Mukherjee modifies and carries into the 21st century by installing a series of floor to ceiling panels that wrap around a corner of a contemporary office quadrant in Facebook’s headquarters.
