A Visit to Sandeep Mukherjee’s Studio

I happened to be over at Sandeep’s studio on Wednesday morning, December 5th, just before his classes began and found that he was setting up in preparation for his students to visit his studio and see his work. I was excited to see his new work and the introduction of vibrant shades of blue. I asked for him to send me photos of the students in his studio so I received two of these, a group photo from each of his two classes. I also queried a few of the students, many of whom are rising art majors or already declared art majors to get their impressions. Following are some quotes about their experiences with his work and studio space that day.

“It was really inspiring to see how his space allows for inspirations to feed off one another. He makes many projects at the same time and I enjoyed thinking of art as a continual process of remaking and making. Never stagnant in the work of Sandeep. He also truly immerses himself in his passions which I hope to embody some day.”

“In Sandeep’s studio, our class had the pleasure of both engaging with the depth of emotion and witnessing the layering he applies through his process. I got lost in the patterns and I was amazed in the way he used materials such as aluminum and plastic to allude to skin and metal. Each piece held a unique narrative in its process. Some artworks required years of layering. Others were molded using various objects such as Sandeep’s own body, tree trunks and street concrete. Our studio visit evoked a deeper appreciated of his work and demonstrated the wide range of possibilities one can take with their materials.”
