Asian Studies Grant for Research or Internships
The Asian Studies Program offers grants to support majors (and, in limited cases, minors) conducting research projects or internships related to Asia during winter break or the summer. These grants are intended to enable meaningful experiential learning by covering essential expenses such as travel, housing, meals, and project-related costs.Funding levels are as follows:
- Up to $6,000 for declared Asian Studies majors
- Up to $3,000 for Asian Studies minors, subject to eligibility review
Grants are designed to support a wide range of projects, including academic research, language study, community engagement, policy work, cultural or creative projects, and internships. The Program recognizes that Asian Studies prepares students for diverse intellectual and professional pathways, and grant proposals are evaluated primarily on their relevance to a student’s course of study rather than on competition among applicants.Eligibility
- Applicants must be declared Asian Studies majors, or Asian Studies minors who have submitted a proposed program of study to the Program Coordinator.
- Priorities will be given to seniors and rising seniors using the funds for their senior projects, especially those who applied to the SURP of that year but were not awarded.
- Students considering the major or minor are encouraged to consult the Coordinator early, as grant eligibility may be established during the declaration process.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit:
- A description of the proposed research or internship
- A project timeline
- A detailed budget (with per diem based on State Department)
- A brief statement explaining how the project relates to their Asian Studies coursework and academic goals
Deadlines
- October 5 for winter break funding (December–January)
- March 1 for summer funding
Applications are reviewed by the Asian Studies Committee. Because the Program is committed to supporting student learning and making use of dedicated funding for this purpose, grants are awarded on an approval basis rather than through a competitive ranking process, provided proposals meet basic eligibility and relevance criteria. Please submit your grant applications to Courtney Derrico (courtney.derrico@pomona.edu) and contact her if you have any questions.
