Chemistry Department Faculty Search Information

Pomona College invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning fall 2023. Candidates with expertise in any area of materials chemistry (broadly defined) are encouraged to apply. Both a Ph.D. as well as postdoctoral or equivalent relevant postgraduate research experience are required. To further assist the search committee in its screening process, all cover letters should address the applicant’s interest in the liberal arts, small residential colleges, and Pomona College in particular, and how they envision their research and teaching interests can contribute to the department and College.

The Department of Chemistry recognizes the persistent barriers to access for women and peoples historically excluded in our field based on ethnicity or race. We seek to disrupt this cycle by recruiting candidates of traditionally marginalized identities and, when hired, providing each with the resources to flourish. For example, Pomona College offers support for conference travel and summer student research assistants, and it offers the opportunity for entering faculty members to apply for a fully-funded leave in their fourth year at the College.

Successful candidates will show evidence of creativity, innovation, and independence, and will have demonstrated or expressed commitment to efforts for diversifying chemistry and overall inclusion and equity in teaching and research. Pomona College considers advising and mentoring students a key component of faculty work. Thus, we ask that all applicants provide a separate statement explaining how they would mentor a diverse student body.

How to Prepare a Diversity Statement

The Department of Chemistry’s Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

The teaching commitment is four courses per year over two semesters of instruction. The successful candidate will teach a course in their area of specialty, as well other courses related to the department’s core curriculum. Successful candidates will have demonstrated engagement with students and mentoring ability, as well as the potential for teaching excellence. In their statement of teaching philosophy, applicants should describe the courses they are excited to contribute to or develop.
