Jazz Ensemble

Jazz Ensemble (Music 37), directed by Barb Catlin. This select ensemble consists of students from The Claremont Colleges and plays music in a variety of styles. They meet in Bryant Hall, Thatcher Music Building (4th Street & College Ave.) on Tuesday & Thursday 4:15 p.m.–5:45 p.m. Half credit. .5 credits.

Spring 2024 Auditions

Auditions will consist of the following:
1.   Scales: chromatic scale and a few major scales of your choice
2.   Solo selection. This can be any number of things:
     o   A jazz etude or an excerpt from jazz band music
     o   A classical etude or an excerpt from concert band or orchestra music
     o   A tune, such as blues, transcription, or jazz standard (i.e. “Autumn Leaves”)
3.   Sightreading.
4.   Improvisation. Please demonstrate any improvisation skills if possible.

Vocalists: Please select 2 songs of varying styles within the jazz idiom to sing. Bring music if possible.

Drummers: Play the following styles: swing, rock/hip-hop, bossa nova, samba, Cuban if any, jazz waltz, ballad
