This fall, the Pomona College Department of Music’s free concert series will feature intrepid student performances of major works such as Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony (Oct. 9 &11) and Handel’s Messiah (Dec. 4 & 6); the premiere of a new chamber opera composed by the department’s newest faculty member Ania Vu, Odessa: Through the Doors (Oct. 3); and diverse music from across the globe.
The department’s current and former piano faculty unite for a tantalizingly rare presentation of Steve Reich’s logistically and musically complex chamber piece Six Pianos (Nov. 1). The Eclipse String Quartet, known for their ardent commitment to promoting new music, will perform a premiere by Ali Can Puskulcu and works by Bacewicz, Golijov, and Vu (Nov. 8). Faculty artist Genevieve Feiwen Lee (piano) will be joined by her Redfish Piano Trio colleagues to perform works by late-romantic French composer Mélanie Bonis along with works by Mozart and Dvořák (Sep. 12).
“This semester’s curriculum will challenge our students to reach new artistic heights and bring inspiration to our community of music lovers,” says Melissa Givens, chair of the music department. “Not to mention,” she adds, “our incredible faculty concerts offer a wealth of talent for all to enjoy!”
Bridges Hall of Music will resonate with the jubilant sounds of Celliola, an annual musical fiesta led by violist Cindy Fogg and cellist Tom Flaherty (Sep. 13); a Festive Brass program featuring works for large ensemble (Oct. 25); the semi-annual Fête Musicale comprising an eclectic selection of works chosen by faculty (Sep. 20); and a solo piano recital by Genevieve Feiwen Lee (Oct. 24).
The department’s highly accomplished student ensembles—the Pomona College Orchestra, Choir, Concert Band, Glee Club, Jazz Ensemble, Balinese Gamelan and West African Music Ensemble—will offer concerts that encourage members and audiences alike to explore a range of musical styles and eras.
