Campus Update from President Starr (2/14/24)

Dear Pomona College Community,

I’m writing to share several items of good news.

I’ll begin with our Career Development Office’s new report on first destinations for students who graduated in the Class of 2023. It shows that nine out of 10 Pomona Class of 2023 graduates had confirmed career outcomes such as a job or internship, graduate school and service opportunities.

Employers included Bloomberg, Cedars Sinai, Meta, National Institutes of Health, Nike, the Peace Corps and Tesla. Oxford, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Yale were among the graduate school destinations for this impressive class. The report can be found by scrolling down a bit on our outcomes web.

The report also documents the many prestigious fellowships and awards – such as the Churchill, Downing and Goldwater scholarships – received by students in the Class of 2023.

In that vein, Pomona also received recognition this week as one of the top producers of U.S. Fulbright students for 2023-24 for baccalaureate institutions. This happens year after year, and is a credit to our students, faculty and the work of our Career Development Office.

Let me close today by sharing news of a new initiative that connects Sagehens across generations to the classrooms of Pomona. The Return to Pomona program brings talented alumni back to campus for a semester to teach and offer guidance, drawing from their experience, to students.\

Kicking off the program this semester is Mikey Dickerson ’01, a Pomona math major who went on to work for Google and then was enlisted in 2013 to help save the troubled healthcare.gov website as the Affordable Care Act took hold. He would later become the first administrator of the U.S. Digital Service, launched by President Obama in 2014.

At Pomona this semester, he is teaching a class on managing complex systems and will give a lecture at Alumni Weekend, which is April 25-28.

I’m grateful for all of our alumni who give back and share their knowledge and expertise with each new generation of Sagehens.

With best wishes,

Gabi
