President Starr's Weekly Update (2/14/23)

Dear Pomona College Community,

I’m writing to share the Career Development Office’s new outcomes page, including the new report on first destinations for our graduates in the Class of 2022, with students entering fields ranging from healthcare to technology to education.

We heard back from the vast majority of our graduates, and of those who replied, 71 percent went on to jobs or internships, 21 percent set off for graduate school (including Cambridge, Dartmouth and UC Berkeley, to name a few) and the remaining eight percent pursuing fellowships, service projects or other opportunities.

Members of the Class of 2022 landed a range of prestigious fellowships such as the Gates Cambridge and Watson fellowships, and just this week Pomona was named a top producer of Fulbright students for 2022-2023.

Sagehens are working for good well before graduation. Sara Garza Gonzalez ’25 and Valentina Liberman ’25, as just one example, pursued a Projects for Peace entrepreneurship skills training effort in Panama in the summer after their first year at Pomona.

Pomona’s liberal arts education continues to allow students to work across disciplines in creative ways. Dylan McCuskey ’23, as one example, recently had an English paper that draws on theoretical physics accepted for publication in a literary journal.

In a similar cross-disciplinary vein, the Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College on February 23 and 24 will host an art & science colloquium, developed from a Pomona physics course on the Art and Science of Optics.

With the Geology Department celebrating its centennial, this weekend brings the 43rd Annual Woodford-Eckis Lectureship.

Finally, let me point you to our Sagehen Athletics website for a full range of sporting events. The men’s basketball team is on a roll, having won 15 of its last 16 games. A 12-1 record in SCIAC games has Pomona-Pitzer in first place and the next home game is Saturday against Cal Lutheran. Women’s basketball, meanwhile, scored an 88-84 road win over nationally-ranked La Verne last week, and their senior day game is on Saturday against Cal Lutheran as well.

Go Sagehens!

With best wishes,

Gabi
