President Starr's Weekly Update (4/20/23)

Dear Pomona College Community,

This is the time of year for plenty of bustle on our beautiful campus.

Earlier this week, hundreds of newly-admitted students and their families visited campus for the full, in-person experience of Pomona. Many thanks to everyone who helped make it a special day for the new students who will become the next group of Sagehens.

By now, you’ve undoubtedly noticed the massive canopy structure going up on Marston Quad, a signal that two significant annual events in the life of the College are drawing near. First comes Alumni Weekend and Reunion Celebrations, April 27–30, and we expect strong attendance.

Then, only two weeks later, arrives Commencement Weekend, May 12-14, when our graduating seniors will join the Sagehen alumni community.

Post-Commencement will bring a bit more quiet – but not silence – to campus. Pomona will host the Questbridge National College Admission Conference on May 20. For nearly two decades, Questbridge has been a key partner in our work to recruit students from lower-income backgrounds.

Earlier this month, a new class of rising sophomores was selected for our Pomona Academy for Youth Success, which brings promising high-school students from groups underrepresented in higher education to campus each summer to live in the residence halls and receive academic preparation for college. PAYS runs from June 25 to July 21 this year, and this thriving outreach effort is another way Pomona seeks to fulfill our unique role in promoting opportunity in American higher education.

Many thanks to everyone who pitches in to make these events and programs possible. You have my gratitude as we reach these busy final weeks of spring semester.

Finally, I want to invite you to attend an important pair of events connected to our ongoing work of addressing antisemitism:

I urge everyone to attend.

With best wishes,

Gabi
