Optional practical training (OPT) is work authorization for F-1 students that allows temporary employment in their major field of study. A student may be authorized for 12 months of OPT, and becomes eligible for another 12 months of OPT when they change to a higher educational level. | Pre-Completion OPT | Available to students during their program of study. Participation in Pre-Completion OPT counts towards the total 12 months of OPT. Pre-Completion OPT must be part-time (≤ 20 hours per week) while the school is in session and can be full-time during school breaks. |
| Post-Completion OPT | Available to students after their program of study is completed. Students must work full-time ( > 20 hours per week). |
| STEM OPT Extension | A 24-month extension of post-completion OPT available to students with eligible STEM majors. |
| H-1B Cap-Gap Extension | An extension for F-1 students who are in-between the end of their post-completion OPT or STEM OPT and the start of their H-1B status. |
