This fall, the Pomona College Department of Music’s free concert series will feature student performances of major works such as Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5 and Handel’s “Messiah”; the premiere of “Odessa: Through the Doors,” a new chamber opera composed by Ania Vu, the department’s newest faculty member; and diverse music from across the globe.
The department’s current and former piano faculty unite for a rare presentation of Steve Reich’s chamber piece “Six Pianos.” The Eclipse String Quartet, known for their commitment to promoting new music, will perform a premiere by Ali Can Puskulcu and works by Bacewicz, Golijov and Vu. Faculty pianist Genevieve Feiwen Lee will be joined by her Redfish Piano Trio colleagues to perform works by late-romantic French composer Mélanie Bonis along with works by Mozart and Dvořák.
“This semester’s curriculum will challenge our students to reach new artistic heights and bring inspiration to our community of music lovers,” says Melissa Givens, chair of the Music Department. “Not to mention,” she adds, “our incredible faculty concerts offer a wealth of talent for all to enjoy!”
Bridges Hall of Music will resonate with the sounds of Celliola, an annual musical fiesta led by violist Cindy Fogg and cellist Tom Flaherty; a Festive Brass program featuring works for large ensemble; the semi-annual Fête Musicale comprising an eclectic selection of works chosen by faculty; and a solo piano recital by Lee.
The department’s student ensembles—the Pomona College Orchestra, Choir, Concert Band, Glee Club, Jazz Ensemble, Balinese Gamelan and West African Music Ensemble—will offer concerts that encourage members and audiences alike to explore a range of musical styles and eras.
All the department’s concerts are free and open to the public.
