Housing and Residence Life during the Construction of the Center for Global Engagement (CGE).
Over the past five years, staff from Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Facilities and Campus Services have collaborated to develop the architectural and engineering plans for the Center for Global Engagement (CGE).
The project is approaching a critical milestone. In May 2026, the Board of Trustees will determine whether to approve or delay the CGE project. If approved, the project team will move quickly to begin demolition of the current Oldenborg facility and prepare the site for major construction.
Housing and Residence Life is planning for the demolition of the current Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations. Please see more information below regarding this project.
Construction of the Center for Global Engagement (CGE)
When is demolition of Oldenborg slated to start? How long is construction?
- Pending Approval from the Board of Trustees - demolition of the current Oldenborg residence hall is planned for summer 2026.
 - Facilities and Campus Services is coordinating on a 2-year project timeline. Summer 2026 - summer 2028, with fall 2028 projected as first semester for occupancy.
 - See more information regarding the construction and images of the Center for Global Engagement.

How might Oldenborg demolition impact spring 2026 closing?
- Spring 2026 move-out expectations for residents will be the same as with all other residents – remove all items from the space, leaving all college provided items in good condition, and key return.
 - Spring 2026 Oldenborg residents participating in spring late stay or summer transition housing may require an interim room change upon closing.

How will the College address the reduction in ~120 residential beds?
There are 4 main strategies that HRL may use some combination of during the construction period:
Increased Housing Density*
- *Depending on how many students choose off-campus housing and study away options. The number and need of Housing Density (as well as which rooms) will not be known until after the off-campus housing and study away options are complete - around March/April 2026.
 - HRL may utilize overflow housing options, turning the larger single rooms on campus to double occupancy and larger double rooms on campus to triple occupancy.
 - Rooms for overflow will be across campus, impacting mostly Clarks and Gibson (traditionally larger rooms for junior housing), Harwood (traditionally sophomore housing) and Lyon Court (traditionally larger rooms for first year housing)

Increased Off-Campus Approvals
- HRL may approve an increased number of off-campus housing applications for rising junior and senior classes.
 - Current juniors and sophomores may want to consider off-campus living as an option. Being approved for off-campus housing means students navigate their own private leases.
 - Timeline: Off-campus applications will be open from early December to the end of February.
 - Local Options: Students may review local off campus options.

Increased Fall and Full Year Study Away
- Pomona’s residential occupancy is often highest during fall semester, as such, fall study away is highly encouraged to help relieve occupancy pressures.
 - Study Away is often a junior year experience. As such, the current sophomores (Class of 2028) are highly encouraged to start exploring study away for next year.
 - See more information regarding study away.

Off-Site Campus-Housing*
- *this option will only be necessary if any of the other options do not reach anticipated goals.

What might be the difference in Campus Housing between Fall and Spring Semesters?
Due to fall graduates, Spring Housing occupancy is often more relaxed as there are less students on campus. However, students returning from fall study away may expereence fewer non-suite singles than traditionally in the spring.
Where will interim language/global students be housed during construction?
- Lawry Court suites will be utilized during the construction period for the residential part of the language/global program.
 - As with Oldenborg, those room assignments will be filled in a separate room selection process held prior to general selection.
 - See more information regarding Global Pomona and Mondern Languages and International Relations program. More information regarding the academic language/global program can be found here.
