What’s Happening at Pomona College this Summer

Tour group

The academic year has ended at Pomona College, but plenty of activity continues on campus. Find out what’s happening this summer and what to do if you want to visit.

A Night (or Afternoon) at the Museum: The Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College, a space for some of the region’s most compelling and innovative exhibitions, is open through June 27 and will reopen on July 13, with hours Wednesday through Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. See a list of current and future exhibitions. Admission is free and open to the public.

A summer film series featuring movies with topics related to the museum’s current exhibitions will take place in the courtyard on Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. The galleries will be open until 10 p.m. on those days. Next up: PlayTime on July 14. Bring your blankets, chairs and snacks!

Much Ado About Shakespeare: Ophelia’s Jump, a nonprofit regional theatre company, will stage A Winter’s Tale as part of its Midsummer Shakespeare Festival at Sontag Greek Theatre on Pomona’s campus July 14-24.

Do Your Research: Over 90 students will be on campus conducting focused research with faculty members as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). The research projects are funded, and all fields of study are included.

Coffee, Anyone? The fully renovated Café 47, located in Smith Campus Center, is open for coffee service as well as offering breakfast and lunch items. Summer hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Public Art Appreciation: Summer is a great time to visit the James Turrell Skyspace. The architectural installation heightens the viewer’s awareness of light, sky, and the activity of perception. The sunrise lighting program begins 100 minutes before sunrise, and the evening program begins about 25 minutes before sunset and continues for approximately one hour.

The Road to Success: Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS) is back on campus this summer and will bring 100 local underrepresented high school students to campus for an intensive four-week residential program June 26-July 22. Students will attend classes taught by Pomona faculty, with Pomona students serving as teaching assistants.

Get in the Swim of Things: Pomona College Summer Swim is offering swimming and diving lessons and a swim team for children as well as pool memberships for lap swimming at Haldeman Pool and recreational swimming at Pendleton Pool.

Be Our Guest: In-person campus visits are back this summer. The Office of Admissions looks forward to welcoming prospective students and their families and showcasing the College through information sessions and student-led campus tours. Make sure to pre-register!

Orient Yourself: Yes, it’s summer, but the College is already preparing for the fall and to welcome the Class of 2026 and fall 2022 transfer students during New Student Orientation. New students will move into residence halls August 20, and orientation week activities will include Orientation Adventure trips, academic advising and more.
