Student Employment - Oldenborg Language Partners

Language Partner Program

The Language Partner Program (LPP) is a critical part of language learning at Pomona College. A revised LPP will be piloted in 2026-27. The 5C students enrolled in one of the six Pomona languages; Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish can take advantage of the resource at no cost to them.

Language Partners (LPs) are recruited from native or advanced speakers of one of these languages who are also Pomona College or 7C students. They are recruited and trained by the Foreign Language Resource Center (FLRC) in conjunction with the language faculty in Mason to support their peers.

Language Partner (LP) Responsibilities

  • Serve as an additional resource for the assigned language department throughout the semester.
  • Follow the guidance of the department to provide tutoring support for language learners.
  • Submit semester availability for tutoring so it can be posted on the FLRC website.
  • Schedule tutoring appointments through WC Online for both in-person and virtual sessions (3 hours of in-person and 2 hours of virtual tutoring per week).
  • Respond to student emails within 24 hours.

Department/Program Use of Language Partners

Each language department or program may determine how best to utilize its LPs based on curricular priorities and student needs. LPs may be asked to:

  • Assist students with pronunciation, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and speaking skills.
  • Help students prepare for quizzes, exams, oral presentations, and proficiency interviews.
  • Lead review sessions or study groups as requested by the department.
  • Support course-specific learning objectives and reinforcing classroom instruction.
  • Recommend effective language-learning strategies and campus resources.
