As its centennial approaches in 2031, Bridges Auditorium is preparing for what comes next — preserving its character while welcoming a new century.

Taylor Swift, shown here in concert, is one of many top artists who have taken the stage.

As Pomona College prepares for a larger effort to restore Bridges Auditorium, the venue is attracting more touring acts to help sustain its operations and support student services on campus.

“The artists who come here see the charm of Big Bridges,” says Matt Pavey, director of Bridges Auditorium and public programming. “You don’t see that in other venues.”

Most recently, the auditorium captured the national spotlight when Pomona College hosted the California gubernatorial debate

Future restoration efforts will modernize the historic theater while preserving its character, ensuring it remains competitive for artists and comfortable for audiences. Planned improvements include:

  • Upgrades to HVAC, electrical, elevator and plumbing systems
  • New seating aligned with contemporary comfort standards
  • Enhanced sound system
  • Expanded accessibility throughout the venue

“This renovation will create a modern, accessible space that remains vibrant and relevant for today’s artists and audiences,” says Jeff Roth, vice president, chief operating officer and treasurer of Pomona College. “With updates like air-conditioning to enable year-round use, we will preserve the building’s historic charm while expanding programming for the community.”

Pavey adds that Bridges Auditorium is getting ready for its centennial in 2031: “These improvements will keep us going for another 100 years.”
