Dear Class of 2029,
Welcome to Pomona College! My name is Joelle Balthazar, and I have the privilege of serving as your First-Year Class Dean. I’m delighted to welcome you to our community and look forward to meeting you this fall.Starting college is a significant life transition, and I’m here to support you throughout the journey.
My role is to help you establish a strong foundation for a meaningful and successful experience at Pomona. Whether you have questions about academics, campus life, or just need someone to talk to, I hope you’ll view me as a resource and advocate. As your Class Dean, I can support you in many areas—academic planning, time management, personal concerns, understanding college policies, or connecting with campus resources. And if I’m not the right person to assist, I’ll make sure you’re connected with someone who is.A bit about me: I’m originally from Los Angeles, and this is my fifth academic year at Pomona.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, listening to podcasts, and having thoughtful conversations. One of the most rewarding parts of my role is meeting with students one-on-one and supporting you as you explore your interests—both inside and outside the classroom. At Pomona, you’re part of a vibrant, thoughtful, and close-knit community.
One of the things I value most about our campus is the way students care for and learn from one another. I hope you’ll feel that sense of connection from the moment you arrive.Throughout the year, I’ll be hosting programs and events designed to help you build community, connect with peers, and make the most of your time here. I also genuinely value your input—if there’s something you need or ideas you’d like to share, I’m always open to hearing from you.
I look forward to welcoming you to campus this August. Until then, I hope you enjoy your summer, take time to rest, and get excited for all that’s ahead. You’re about to begin an incredible journey!
Warm regards,
Dean Balthazar
