Notification of Accommodations
Faculty Notification Letters (FNLs) are official communications from Accessibility Resources and Services (ARS) that outline approved accommodations for a student enrolled in your course. These letters are sent each term when a student requests to use their accommodations in your class via their ARS online portal. The responsibility of providing academic accommodations does not go into effect until the email is sent.
Faculty will likely receive the majority of the notification letters at the beginning of the term, but they can be received at any time throughout the semester. Accommodations are not retroactive. If notification is presented in the middle of the semester, accommodations are required from that point forward.
What to Expect in the Letter
Each letter will include:
- The student’s name and course information
- A list of approved accommodations
- Instructions or guidance specific to implementing accommodations
- ARS contact information for questions or concerns
Note: The letter will not disclose the nature of the student’s disability—only the accommodations required to ensure equal access.
What You Should Do
- Review the letter carefully. Ensure you understand each listed accommodation.
- Implement accommodations promptly. Timely support is critical for access.
- Reach out to ARS with questions. If anything is unclear or seems to conflict with course requirements, consult with ARS as soon as possible.
- Maintain confidentiality. Do not discuss accommodations publicly or disclose that a student has accommodations to others.

Please note: Academic accommodations should maintain the academic integrity of the courses and the academic program as a whole while attempting to meet the student's needs. Pomona College does not waive academic requirements for students with disabilities. Rather, our policy is to assist the student in his or her efforts to meet Pomona's requirements by making reasonable accommodations. Learn more about implementing the academic accommodations.
If you would like to have more discussions about disabilities and academic accommodations, we are available to meet individually or with your department.
