Accommodations and Access for Students with Disabilities
ARS is the designated campus authority responsible for verifying disabilities and determining appropriate accommodations for students with documented disabilities, ensuring equal access to all college programs and services. Our compliance with federal and state law is a shared responsibility and faculty play an important role in the campus' effort to provide equal access. Accommodations that require discussion and modification of campus policies, procedures, and practices can involve an interactive process between the student, ARS, and the faculty.
Steps for Accessing and Implementing Accommodations
- Student Self-Identification
The student initiates the process by submitting an online application to ARS, self-identifying as a student with a disability and requesting accommodations. - ARS Review and Accommodation Planning
ARS reviews the submitted documentation, meets with the student, and determines appropriate accommodations based on individual needs and program requirements. - Requesting Accommodations Each Term
The student must request to use their approved accommodations for each class, every term. Faculty will receive a Faculty Notification Letter outlining the accommodations. - Private Discussion Between Student and Faculty
If needed, the student and faculty member should arrange a private meeting to discuss how accommodations will be implemented. These conversations should never take place in public or involve questions about the student’s diagnosis. - Faculty Collaboration and Consultation
Faculty may consult with ARS to better understand accommodations, address specific barriers, or clarify how accommodations relate to essential course or program requirements. - Ongoing Communication with ARS
If an accommodation is unclear or presents concerns, faculty should contact ARS directly. Collaborative consultation is key to ensuring appropriate and effective implementation.
