Test accommodations provide students with disabilities the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of course material on an equal basis with their non-disabled peers. The accommodations intend to ensure that the examination process accurately measures the student’s knowledge and abilities in a specific subject matter rather than reflecting limitations due to disability.
Accessibility Resources and Services (ARS) works in partnership with the instructor to ensure that a student’s accommodative needs are met. Instructors are expected to provide all test accommodations as prescribed by ARS. However, if the instructor is unable to proctor the exam with accommodations, the student should submit an exam request to the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC).
Process for Use of Testing Accommodations
Steps to Use Your Approved Testing Accommodations
- ARS student submits an Accommodation Request through myARS each term. Student must select "Alternative Testing" for each class in which this accommodation is needed.
- ARS emails a Notification of Accommodation to each instructor within one business day.
- ARS student confirms with instructor 3 business days in advanced of scheduled exam if instructor will provide test accommodations. If instructor is unable to provide test accommodations, student must submit an exam request through SDRC.

Guidelines
- Exam requests should be submitted as soon as the student has determined the instructor cannot provide test accommodations for exams.
- If an exam date changes, students must update the exam request with SDRC.
- SDRC cannot guarantee the ability to proctor exams that are requested less than 3 business day of exam date.
- Schedule time of the exam must overlap with when the class is taking the exam. Exceptions include: exam time is outside of SDRC office hours, extended time would overlap with another class, or student is approved for make-up exam by instructor.
In-Person Exams Vs. Remote Exams
In-Person Exams
- In-person exams (physical or electronic format exam) are those which are administered in an in-person classroom setting. Instructors are expected to provide test accommodations for in-person exams. If the instructor is unable to provide test accommodations for in-person exams, SDRC will proctor the exam on the instructor's behalf. Student must submit a proctored exam request through SDRC.
Remote/Online Exams
- Remote exams are given outside of the classroom and are not administered in- person. All students in the class are expected to provide their own equipment and identify their own location to take the exam.
- Instructors are expected to provide testing accommodations for remote exams, including setting up extended time allowances in testing platforms such as Sakai/Canvas, etc.
- Students are responsible to remind their instructor to apply their extended time before each exam.
- For remote exams that the instructor proctors: if the instructor is unable to provide test accommodations, SDRC will proctor the exam on the instructor's behalf. Student must submit an exam request through SDRC in order for SDRC to proctor the exam.
