2017-18 Academic Year: Marina Simonnet

Marina Simonnet

Tell us something special about your hometown?
Nantes is a lovely and dynamic city near the Atlantic Ocean. It is famous for its contemporary art event “Le Voyage à Nantes” (the Journey to Nantes), which takes place every summer. The cultural animations and the exhibition of art pieces all over the city make the event similar to a large outdoor museum. It is a fun way to (re)discover the city and make art open to everyone.

Tell us what you studied at the university and what you might like to do one day?
As a graduate student, I am pursuing a master’s degree in contemporary art. I am currently writing my thesis on oriental influences through the art of gardens in France during the 19th century. In the future, I would love to work as a researcher and teacher in art history.

Tell us what you would like to see in California or in the U.S. during your time at the College?
California has many incredible landscapes! I look forward to seeing the state’s mountains, forests, deserts, and beaches.

Tell us about a favorite activity that you pursue when you have free time?
I enjoy cooking, sewing and knitting at home. I also love dancing to tango and salsa.

Tell us when and how you started studying foreign languages and what you like about learning languages?
I started studying English and Spanish in high school and then Italian in college. I like the fact that learning a foreign language does not only involve learning grammar, but also learning about other cultures and interacting with people from across the globe.
